Pregnant Women Face Hostile Behavior When Applying For Jobs, New Study Shows
ScienceDaily (May 6, 2008) — Pregnant women may still face judgment and obstacles to getting jobs, shows two recent studies by George Mason University and Rice University professors.

Notice the “still”, implying that this is going to change someday.
But revenge themes have always been very unpopular with women. Even female-oriented revenge flicks such as Jodie Foster’s “the Brave One” have not succeeded with women. This is likely due to profound gender differences. Men are both more comfortable with violence and familiar with what it can and cannot achieve. Every young boy is in at least several fights, while most young women experience social exclusion rather than physical intimidation as right of passage from puberty into adulthood. For men, moreover, physical violence can work to produce a higher status in society or reverse their usurpation from a position by a rival. Physical violence and revenge, however, does not “work” for women in the mating game. It does not make women either prettier or younger. Women generally take the tack that violent revenge does not work because it does not, indeed, work for them. For men, and within reason, violent revenge does work and is sometimes mandated to prevent further loss of power, status, and even life.
Couple hunted over tot’s vodka drink
A WARRANT has been issued for the arrest of a couple who allegedly spiked their toddler’s drink with vodka and video-taped the incident.
Police said the couple, who allegedly filmed themselves spiking their 18-month-old’s drink with a Vodka Cruiser shots, failed to appear in Longreach Magistrates Court this morning, the Courier-Mail reports.
A warrant had been issued for their arrest, police said.
They said they believed the couple had fled interstate with the child and police would consider seeking extradition when they were found.
Police allege the child’s 20-year-old mother and 25-year-old stepfather spiked the child’s drink last month.
Stepfather. It’s always a stepfather.
As I’ve had occasion to mention before, that part-time pay gap is something of a fraud. For it is comparing the wages per hour earned by women working part-time with those of men working full-time, thus conflating two entirely different things. Part-timers everywhere earn less than full-timers, so this is nothing whatever to do with gender. Indeed, from the same ONS ASHE figures we can calculate that the part-time pay gap for women (ie, part-time women compared with full-time women) is 14% and that for men 27%. we are clearly therefore not dealing solely with a gender issue.
However, there’s another aspect to this which interests me. From the TUC’s briefing paper *on the subject we find on page 14 that (by a slightly different measure) the gender pay gap in the UK is 20%, that in Denmark 18%, in Sweden 16%. So this isn’t something that can be explained by the absence of social democracy, the absence of free childcare, the absence of comprehensive union agreements, for those things do indeed exist in those places.
